CENTRE FOR CREATIVITY

PROJECT:

CLASS-BASED DESIGN THINKING PROJECT

ROLE:

RESEARCHER, DESIGNER

TOOLS:

PROCREATE, G SUITE

TIMEFRAME:

SPRING 2021

PROJECT OVERVIEW

The Centre for Creativity project was completed as part of the Design Thinking coursework at the University of Georgia. With a group of three, we sought to answer the question: “How do we increase creative confidence among UGA students?” Our proposed solution is the Centre for Creativity - a new building to be constructed at the center of UGA’s popular Lake Herrick area.

THE PROCESS

60% of current jobs fail to challenge skills such as independent judgement, decision making, and idea generation.

PROBLEM SPACE

Students do not feel creatively challenged in the traditional classroom setting.

  • Students struggle to see the value in passion projects if those projects don’t land them a job.

  • Instructors and employers want to see the application of skills outside of school work.

  • Students often won’t attempt a new skill if it’s not part of their school’s identity.

  • Evaluations are dependent on strict guidelines and rubrics.

How do we increase the creative confidence of all students at the University of Georgia?

CURRENT MARKET

38,920

Students studying within 17 schools / colleges at UGA.

465

Buildings that make up UGA’s campus.

ZERO

Buildings that offer all students access to creative materials and extensive equipment rentals.

How big is the market? The graph here shows the student population by school or college unit. Arts & Sciences students are currently the only population with access to various creative resources. Our solution proposes a new building on campus to provide students with a creative outlet.

DESIGN SOLUTION

Welcome to the Centre for Creativity

A section of UGA land at Lake Herrick that:

  • Offers weekly workshops where students can learn from talented keynote speakers.

  • Takes inspiration from Olympic parks and nature preservations.

  • Features high-end rooms for photography and video productions.

  • Provides studio space and recording booths.

  • Houses a UGA-exclusive rental store.

  • Staff on-site experts will be available for services like portfolio critique, website design, and project planning.

PROTYPING

WHY THE CENTRE?

The Innovation District at the University of Georgia has already established its commitment to “strengthen the creative culture and technology-based economy of our community.”

FRESH AIR
Nature and outdoor environments encourage movement and enable students to reflect and process information.

PASSION PROJECTS
Students identify with more than their school or college; in art and movement. Personal success should be cultivated.

CREATIVE CONNECTIONS
The ability to share and gain feedback allows students to sharpen their skills and feel valued in their community.

WHERE DO WE START?

Our research shows that creativity is more than a singular moment; there are processes. The Centre is just the beginning of the journey from inspiration to creation.

CENTRE FOR CREATIVITY
The Centre will be the first of a series of developments to the Lake Herrick area. The building will be the “hub” of student activity on East Campus.

TRAIL SYSTEM
Once the building is established, the trail system surrounding the lake will be renovated and expanded.

OUTDOOR AMENITIES
Once the building and surrounding area are established, outdoor amenities, like the rock wall and mountain park, should be developed.
